Ms. Colella’s Class “Journeys”

By Caitlyn S.

Ms. Colella’s first grade class did “Journeys”. The “Journeys” were about going to different places. They read all different kinds of journeys, like sailing or in the jungle. Suleyman A. said that one of the stories they read was about the first African-American to go around the world in his ship. “He started from Boston and then came back to Boston,” Suleyman said. The story’s name was “Captain Bill”. Suleyman said he would do the unit again. But his favorite story was “ Me on the Map”. Yasmin R. wouldn’t want to do this unit again. She liked the unit, but she wants to learn new things. Griffin W. enjoyed the unit and would do it again. Hopefully, the first graders will do another journey.

Art Class With Mr. Stoch

By Maya P.
I love art class because I love to do art. In art class we paint, color, and build. I love art class! One day we made puppets. It was very fun. First we put the pieces together. Then we decorated it and last we put the stick on.

In The Summer

By Maya P.

My favorite thing to do in the summer is to have a fantastic time in the pool. I also love to play outside with my friends. I cannot wait ‘till I go on vacation, have fun at camp, and ride my bike. I really enjoy hot weather and the smell of summer.

Jessica S. made a train for The Things That Go. She also enjoyed it. She said she might do it again.

First Grade Guest Reader

By Olivia V.
Some very special people have visited the first graders as part of Rocket into Reading. Some of these readers are people you might know! Such as, Mr. Helm, Sarah Collela (Ms. Collela’s sister), and a Firefighter/paramedic. A few students commented about their guest readers and showed their appreciativeness. Grace Ledgar said that her guest reader was very kind. Mathew from Mrs. Merz’s said that his reader was nice and read a great book. Mathew remembers his book, “ Hey Al!” He states that the book was about a janitor who wanted a vacation; a bird flew by his window and took him to Bird Island. Mathew liked the book. Grace remembers her book as being about a naked mole rat that gets dressed. Grace said that the book read to them was funny. Khalil Delaney from Ms. Merz’s said that his book was great and loved it.Khalil, Mathew, and Grace sure enjoyed their guest readers!

Moon Phases

By Casey C.
First Grade was working on moon phases. Yasmin thought moon phases were cool because they only come once a month and most phases are different. Charlotte V. loved how the phases were bright and she also enjoyed learning the phase cycle. Yasmin saw the New Moon getting bigger and bigger until the full moon appeared. Charlotte saw big craters in pictures. Yasmin learned waxing and waning about the moon phases. Charlotte learned that it takes one month for the phases to do their cycle. Yasmin and Charlotte enjoyed learning about moon phases and would love to learn more. Ms. Colella’s class is done learning about moon phases, but Charlotte from Mrs. Griffith’s class is going to learn more about the phases. Ms. Merz, Mrs. Merz, Ms. Colella, and Mrs. Griffith all worked with Hubbard Street and learned to dance about the sun, moon, and Earth. Yasmin and Charlotte both really enjoyed learning about moon phases!
